This Wednesday, November 16, the plane finally took off from the Kennedy Space Center. sls rocket (Space Launch System Rocket), the most powerful in the world, unmanned and with destination on the moon.

So, we are seeing the first step of this ambitious program which is led by NASA and has the support of half a dozen space agencies (including European and Mexican).

Is that after the Apollo missions and space shuttles, the SLS inaugurates a new era of human exploration, this time from outer space.

In this sense, other stages will follow and the final goal is to reach Mars in 2030.

The Artemis 1 mission to the Moon

The main purpose of this first mission unmanned is to test the performance of the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft, as well as the Kennedy Space Center ground systems.

To do this, Orion will be placed in a distant orbit for about a week, venturing as far as 64,000 kilometers behind the Moon, a record for a habitable capsule.

The intention is “to demonstrate the capability of Orion’s systems in a spaceflight environment and ensure safe reentry, descent, ditching and recovery,” NASA clarified.

That’s why this first trip does not include astronauts but two dummies which have about 5,600 sensors per measure the amount of radiation astronauts could be exposed to.

On a future journey, the idea is that this same rocket will carry the first woman and first person of color to our natural satellite. Also, the agency intends install a foundation and, from there, proceed with the exploration.

What are Artemis 2 and Artemis 3 missions and when will they be released?

Artemis 2 Y Artemis 3 are the next planned missions. If Artemis 1 delivers the expected results – and based on the analysis of the data and information it provides – NASA will move forward in this direction.

In 2024, Artemis 2 will lead to astronauts on the moon, but without landing. Yes, it will be the crew Artemis 3 – mission scheduled for 2025 – the one that can set foot on our satellite.

Since then, the plan provides an annual mission to build the Gateway space station orbiting the Moon and a base at its south pole.

The goal is test new equipment, suits, vehicles, a mini power plant, and even the use of ice water. Everything later establish a lasting human presence on the Moon.

All this program has final goal prepare a manned flight to Marsperhaps in the late 2030s. A round trip that will take at least two years.

The launch of Artemis 1, live

“What an incredible sight to see the SLS rocket and spacecraft take off together for the first time”he has declared account nelsonthe director of NASA, after the launch of artemis 1.

The rocket soared into the night sky like a giant fire ball at 1:47 am (local time; 3:47 am in Argentina) from the Kennedy Space Center in front of thousands of spectators who had gathered at the scene.
