“Our military captured a North Korean-launched short-range ballistic missile into the East Sea (the name given to the Sea of Japan in the two Koreas) from Wonsan, Gangwon Province, at around 10:48 local time (1:48 a.m. GMT). today, November 17,” South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said in a brief statement.

Specifically, the missile flew approximately 240 kilometers with a maximum height of 47 km and at a speed of Mach 4 (equivalent to four times the speed of sound), according to the JCS, which also revealed that, after launch , South Korea and the United States have held talks to reaffirm their joint defense stance.

For its part, Japan also confirmed the launch of the missile and, from the office of the Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, considered that it was “a threat to peace and security of our country and of regional and international communities”.

Experts point out that North Korea is seizing the opportunity to test prohibited missiles because it hopes to avoid new sanctions by the United Nations (UN), due to the deadlock in the world organization due to the Russian war in Ukraine.

North Korea warns of “fiercer” military actions and tension grows on the peninsula

The trial comes hours after North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui warned against taking “fiercer” military action against the United States and its allies following recent tripartite talks with Japan and Korea of the South.

Is that, the leaders of those three countries, Yoon Suk-yeol, Fumio Kishida and Joe Bidenthey agreed on Sunday to take “decisive steps” to achieve the complete denuclearization of North Korea, as well as to strengthen their commitment to strengthen the so-called “extended deterrence”.

Enhanced or extended deterrence consists of sending US strategic assets into and around the Korean peninsula in a “coordinated manner and as needed” based on the northern regime’s actions.

Furthermore, Choe’s statements come after the Pyongyang regime launched thirty missiles in early November, a record number, in response to major air maneuvers by Seoul and Washington, which further increased tension in the region .

The truth is that tension on the peninsula is reaching unprecedented limits given the repeated tests of North Korean weapons, maneuvers by allies and the possibility that, as satellites testify, Kim Jong-un’s regime is already ready to conduct its first nuclear test since 2017.
