A group of protesters in Iran set fire to the birthplace of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, after two months of protests against the regime, according to footage released this Friday (18).
According to images posted on social networks and verified by AFP, the house in the city of Khomein in Markazi province was set on fire on Thursday (17) and an enthusiastic crowd of demonstrators passed in front of the house.
It is believed that he was born at the beginning of the 20th century in this house located in the city of Khomein, where Khomeini’s surname comes from.
Khomeini was a staunch opponent of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and was forced into exile in France, to which he returned victorious in 1979, to lead the Islamic Revolution.
The cleric died in 1989, but continues to be admired by his successor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
His house has been turned into a memorial museum.
The extent of property damage is uncertain.
Demonstrations in Iran began with protests over the death of young Mahsa Amini, detained by the morality police, and constitute the largest street movement against power since the 1979 Revolution.
The demonstrations were launched on the condition that women wear headscarves, a rule imposed by Khomeini, but the protests ignited a broader movement to end the Islamic Republic.
