When a Southwest Airlines pilot in the United States went viral in an effort to help a passenger who lost his cell phone, he demonstrated that the motto “the customer is always right” can be applied to his plane.
The incident occurred in Long Beach when a passenger forgot his mobile phone at the airport and boarded the plane without it. The curious scene of the pilot hanging from the cockpit to allow the device to reach its owner was shared on Twitter by the airline on November 13 – it’s unclear whether the incident happened on the same date.
The pilot bends down and reaches out the window to pick up the phone held by a ramp worker.
According to the company, the passenger realized that his mobile phone had been forgotten after the boarding was closed, as the plane had withdrawn and was about to start the flight.
He alerted the crew, and immediately agents located the phone and took it to the plane so it could be returned to the passenger – even if the pilot had to risk himself through the small window.
“They gave the phone to our jumping ramp agents to give it to the captain and give it back to the customer,” the airline said on Facebook.
According to Southwest Airlines spokesperson Chris Perry, the name of the cell phone’s owner was not disclosed, but he thanked everyone for the gesture.
The video was posted in reference to World Kindness Day, an international holiday created to promote kindness around the world, and with a message using the hashtag #WorldKindnessDay.
“We love to see the goodwill efforts of our staff to help a passenger,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
