The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that “strong explosions” occurred on Saturday and Sunday at the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia, which is under Russian control and located in the south of Ukraine.

“This news is extremely worrying. Absolutely unacceptable explosions have occurred at this important nuclear power plant site,” said IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi.

“Kyiv does not stop its provocations aimed at creating the threat of a man-made disaster at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant,” the army said in a statement.

According to the statement, on Saturday and Sunday, Ukrainian forces fired “more than 20 large-caliber shells” at the factory, which is the largest in Europe.

The bullets exploded between blocks 4 and 5, hitting the roof of a “special building” next to the blocks.

The communique insists that “the radiation level in the area where the facility is located remains within the norm” despite the bombings.

Russia, which has been carrying out an attack in Ukraine since February 24, is occupying the territory of the center militarily. Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for the annexation of the region, as well as three other Ukrainian territories.

Russia and Ukraine have been making mutual accusations for months over the bomb attacks in the Russian-controlled nuclear power plant area.
