Ukrainian prosecutors investigate shooting involving Russian prisoners of war
Ukraine’s attorney general’s office is investigating a video that appears to show a Russian soldier opening fire on Ukrainian troops, while other Russian soldiers appear to be surrendering to become prisoners of war. In another recording, the POWs themselves can be seen already dead and lying on the ground.
The incident allegedly occurred in early November in Makiivka municipality, Luhansk region, eastern Ukraine.
The attorney general’s office said the Russian prisoners are suspected of committing an infamous act, namely a false declaration of surrender to get close to the enemy in order to attack him.
After the videos were released, Russia accused Ukrainian soldiers of illegally killing prisoners. Ukrainian authorities have denied the allegations and said they would investigate the incident.
