European Parliament cyberattacked by a pro-Russian group

MEP Roberta Metsola said the European Parliament she chairs is under a “sophisticated cyberattack” undertaken by a pro-Kremlin group.

The announcement was made by the Speaker of the Parliament at 12:45 Brasília time. Around 14:00, the European Parliament website was down.

Metsola did not clarify whether the group describes itself as Russian or simply as the pro-Vladimir Putin regime in Russia.

The attack came on a day of retaliation against Russia in the European Parliament. As Metsola points out, lawmakers today approved a text describing Russia as a “state sponsor of terrorism” in the Ukraine war and urging all 27 countries of the European Union (EU) to do the same.

In the text, which was accepted with 494 votes in Strasbourg (58 against and 44 abstentions), MEPs state that Russia is “using terrorist tools” as well as being a “state that supports terrorism”.

Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky welcomed the decision. “Russia should be isolated at all levels and held accountable for its long-standing policy of terrorism in Ukraine and around the world,” he wrote on Twitter.
