Peruvian President Pedro Castillo announced on Thursday that he has accepted the prime minister’s resignation and will once again overhaul his ministry, amid a long-running battle between the executive and legislature.
Former prime minister Aníbal Torres, a staunch ally of Castillo, challenged the opposition-controlled Congress last week for a vote of no confidence. But Congress refused to hold such a vote on Thursday, saying the conditions for it were not met.
“I will renew the cabinet by accepting the resignation of the prime minister, whom I thank for his work on behalf of the country,” Castillo said in a national television broadcast.
The challenge to the vote of confidence was aimed at putting pressure on Congress amid strained relations between the two powers.
Opposition lawmakers tried to topple Castillo twice, but failed to topple him, although they succeeded in removing several ministers.
“I ask Congress to respect the rule of law, the rights of the people, democracy and the balance of power of the state,” Castillo said.
