British media group the BBC said this Sunday (27) that one of its correspondents in China was detained and beaten by police while covering protests against anti-covid policy in Shanghai.
“The BBC is extremely concerned about the treatment of our journalist, Ed Lawrence, who was detained and held in handcuffs while covering the Shanghai protests,” a BBC spokesperson told AFP.
He added that Lawrence was “beaten and kicked by the police” during several hours of detention, despite being a licensed journalist in the country.
At the weekend, hundreds of people demonstrated in many cities of China, such as Shanghai and Beijing, against the curfews and restrictions imposed by the authorities as part of the fight against Kovid-19.
“We have not received any explanation or apology from the Chinese authorities, except that the authorities who later released him claimed that he had been detained for his own good in case he caught Covid-19 from the crowd,” the spokesperson said.
“We don’t see this as a credible explanation,” he concluded.
