In the last few hours, amidst the fever for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, a funny commercial from the British media The Sun for the 2018 World Cup in Russia has gone viral. with two very nice winks for Argentina.
The commercial shows a group of journalists from the English newspaper playing football in the middle of the newsroom and giving everything, literally everything, for the game. The video concludes with the medium’s promotion of its online section dedicated to the World Cup 4 years ago.
But among the many violent and crafty comedies that the editors make, there are two very particular ones that touch Argentines very closely: an outrageous yell at the camera and a goal scored with… but no.
Two nods to Diego
The English accepted the divine greatness of Diego Maradona by comically interpreting the famous celebration of the ten against Greece at the 1994 World Cup in the United States.
In that 4-0, Maradona ran wildly towards the camera to celebrate, with his eyes fixed on the target, Argentina’s third goal by “Coco” Basile against the European team.
It was not only one of the most memorable goals for the South American team in a World Cup, but also the last scored by Diego with the albiceleste.
Even more striking is The Sun’s homage to “The Hand of God.” At the end of the point, the match is defined with a goal equal to the one scored by Maradona against England in Mexico ’86.
In that historic match, Argentina eliminated England with two unforgettable goals from Diego: the aforementioned “Hand of God” and the famous “goal of the century” in which the Argentine star practically eluded half of the rival team before scoring.
The announcement is officially titled “The Sun World Cup – Office Knockabout”. It was made by the Pulse Creative agency and directed by Andy Lambert.
It went viral on networks four years after it was released because there are no timestamps giving it an “expiration date”. Lambert’s creation works for both 2018 and 2022 and probably a few more World Cups.
What did the Argentines say about The Sun commercial with tributes to their faithful rival? Obviously, the majority cashed it.
“Diego…how you must laugh out loud with this commercial from The Sun newspaper. Best thing I’ve seen in loooong time,” wrote one person who discovered it this year. “Diego Armando and The Sun, one heart!” added another for example.
