He became a monk after all worshipers at a Buddhist temple in Thailand tested positive for methamphetamine, a local official said on Tuesday.
Four monks, including an abbot, from the temple in the rural area of Bung Sam Phan, Phetchabun province (centre), took a drug test on Monday and all had methamphetamine, district administrator Boonlert told Thintapthai.
Dindar added that he was referred to a clinic for detox treatment.
“The temple is now monkless and the residents fear that they will not be able to perform their ceremonies of merit,” he continued.
The ritual of merit involves worshipers providing monks with food to do good deeds.
Boonlert Thintapthai announced that other clergy would be appointed to the temple.
Thailand is a major transit country for methamphetamine traveling from Myanmar’s Shan state via Laos, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
On the streets, pills of this drug are sold for less than 20 baht (about 50 cents).
In recent years, authorities in Southeast Asia have recorded record numbers of methamphetamine seizures.
