A tourist lost his life after being dragged into the sea while taking a selfie due to a storm on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. Ines Gomila, 36, and his wife, Sebastian Queiroz, 52, were reportedly hit by a large wave and thrown into the sea at a location in the Furore region.
Sebastian managed to grab onto some rocks and survived, but Ines sadly drowned. The Argentine couple was on vacation in Italy and were staying in the nearby town of Positano. The accident occurred on Wednesday (23) morning.
According to the Argentine media, they had landed in one of the coves of the Furore fjord and a wave crashed over them as Ines was trying to take a selfie.
Seeing what had happened, the bathers tried to throw a rope to save them. Sebastian managed to grab onto some rocks and was rescued, but Ines was found dead hours later by the Amalfi Coast Guard.
Sebastian was taken to the Castiglione di Ravello Hospital for a medical evaluation.
“Yesterday there was a storm, today there is no storm. The weather was sunny, the sea was choppy, but we did not expect a wave of this magnitude to suddenly appear. We were lost in the water in two seconds,” Queiroz told Argentina. La Voz newspaper.
Local officials said in a statement that the area was severely affected. “At Minori, the sea engulfed the pier, lifted the iron bars and dragged large quantities of logs and debris of all kinds onto the beach and onto the boardwalk. The mayor ordered the boardwalk closed and cordoned off the entire area.”
Ines loved to travel, and the couple, who live in Córdoba in central Argentina, were big fans of Italy and had visited the country before.
