Jiang Zemin, the former Chinese leader who led the country’s transformation from the late 1980s to the early 21st century, died Wednesday at the age of 96, state news agency Xinhua reported.
Jiang came to power after the Tiananmen Square (Heavenly Peace) crackdown and led the world’s most populous country to emerge as a global power.
Xinhua said, “Jiang Zemin died of leukemia and multiple organ failure at the age of 96 at 12:13 am on November 30, 2022 in Shanghai, announced on Wednesday.”
When Jiang replaced Deng Xiaoping as leader in 1989, China was still in the early stages of its economic modernization.
When he resigned from the presidency in 2003, China was a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), had won the right to hold the 2008 Olympic Games and was on its way to assuming the superpower role.
Analysts say Jiang and his group known as the “Shanghai Gang” continued to influence the politics of the Communist regime long after he left power.
He is survived by his wife, Wang Yeping, and their two children.
