Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday criticized Elon Musk’s peace offer to end the war in Ukraine and advised the owner of Tesla and Twitter to travel to Ukrainian territory.
Musk sparked outrage when he formulated a proposed peace deal on Twitter in October to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The billionaire proposed that the Crimean peninsula remain an integral part of Russia, that new referendums be held in the Ukrainian regions “annexed” by the Russians, and that Ukraine be given the status of a neutral country.
At an event hosted by The New York Times, Zelensky appeared to mock Musk’s offer, saying he should visit Ukraine.
Commenting on Musk’s suggestions, Zelensky said, “I think someone is putting pressure on him or drawing conclusions on his own.”
“If you want to understand what Russia is doing here, come to Ukraine and see for yourself,” Zelensky continued. “And then tell me how to end this war, who started it, and when it might end.”
The Tesla and SpaceX founder launched a poll among his more than 100 million Twitter followers in October regarding the peace proposal.
Zelensky, with his own poll on the social network, “Which @elonmusk do you like the most?” with the options “What supports Ukraine” and “What supports Russia”.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, who sent troops to Ukraine on February 24 under the pretext of “decentralizing” the pro-Western country, urged Kiev to negotiate to end the conflict.
But Zelensky assured him that he would never negotiate with Russia while Putin was in power.
