The Argentina national team take on Australia at 4pm on Saturday, which was the big surprise in group D after finishing second and beating both Denmark and Tunisia. The Socceroos will go for the feat. But, as in Bangladesh, Scaleneta continues to add fans all over the world. Now, in Peru they are asking Messi to leave Australia out. “Messi will do our revenge,” Peruvian fans say online.
In June 2022, the Peruvians lost their chance to be present at the World Cup in Qatar by losing the play-off against Australia on penalties. Now that Argentina and the Kangaroos have qualified for the round of 16, the fans are out for revenge.
Upon learning of this crossover, networks from Peruvian fans exploded in favor of La Scaloneta and demanded that Messi avenge Peru’s absence from the World Cup.
“Our revenge will be done by Messi”, “Messi’s revenge, the beard can’t get away with it”, “Revenge yourself, Argentina”, “Come on, Argentina!”, “Come on, Messi, eliminate dad Redmayne and leave Peru without a father. Thank you” or “With everything, Argentina, to avenge Peru”, were some of the requests raised by Peruvian fans and which were picked up by the La República media of that country.
On June 13, the Peruvian team lost on penalties to Australia in the playoff against Australia and was excluded from the World Cup.
The Australians’ hero was Andrew Redmayne, the goalkeeper who came on late in the game to save on penalties.
The team led by Ricardo Gareca failed to repeat what happened at Russia 2018 by qualifying via playoffs, just like they did against New Zealand four years ago.
Australia reached the playoffs after winning their last match of the Asian Qualifiers against the United Arab Emirates 2-1.
Peru has played in five World Cups in its history: it participated in the first World Cup, organized by Uruguay in 1930, then in Mexico in 1970, in Argentina in 1978 and in Spain in 1982. After the World Cup in Spain, Peru has gone 36 years without entering the competition. The losing streak ended with qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia after defeating New Zealand in the national state of Lima in the second leg of the playoffs.
