Russia denied US President Joe Biden’s terms to start peace talks to end the war in Ukraine this Friday (2).

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitriy Peskov’s statement was echoed in the Russian state media at a daily press conference where the representative was asked about the opening made by Biden during French leader Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Washington.

On Thursday night (1), Biden said he was “ready to talk. [Vladimir] If Putin really decides he is looking for a way to end the war – and he hasn’t done that yet.”

According to Peskov, it is “impossible” to accept the US proposal because it requires the country’s troops to leave the occupied Ukrainian territory.

In addition, Moscow claims that the “preferred way” of “resolving the situation” through diplomacy is for the United States and Western countries to recognize four regions in Ukraine that were unilaterally annexed by the Russians: Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

But the spokesman said Putin is “open to negotiations to secure Russia’s interests.” This is not the first time the Russians have refused to examine a French-mediated proposal. Recently, the Vatican and Pope Francis himself were willing to act for peace, but the measure was not even analyzed by Moscow.

There is no indication that a mediated peace is on the horizon to end the conflict that began in February of this year.
