Peruvians protest in Lima after president announces he is dissolving Congress

Peruvians staged anti- and pro-government protests outside the Congress center in the capital, Lima, after President Pedro Castillo announced the dissolution of the national legislature and formed a “government of exception.”

A live broadcast from the front of the Legislative Palace by Reuters news agency shows demonstrators surrounded by shield-armed police singing hymns and waving flags.

Recently, Pedro Castillo announced in a speech to the nation that he will hold new elections to change the country’s Constitution. The media and opposition describe the action as a coup attempt.
