Spanish drug lord Carlos García Morales, 46, nicknamed “El Matador”, was arrested along with his Brazilian girlfriend during a police operation. The two were in a car with 600kg of cocaine, more than 100,000 Euros (equivalent to R$550,000) and a large-caliber “arsenal of weapons”.
According to El País, the arrest was recorded in early November, but was announced by the country’s National Police during the presentation of the results of Operation Espeto yesterday afternoon.
Carlos and his girlfriend, who have not been identified, were two of the 17 people arrested in an operation launched in January to crack down on a smuggling ring jointly established between Colombia and Spain.
The two lived in a luxurious house in the city of Ourense, one of the safest areas in Spain. On October 28, the target of the operation was the residence, but the couple had already left the venue in the trailer.
They claimed they were on a tourist trip from Galicia to Asturias when they were stopped by the police. Alongside the couple, a Mexican national who “protected” the couple’s trip was also arrested.
With them were found grenades, shotguns, submachine guns and even a rocket launcher. Some of the materials had to be taken to a bunker for proper detonation.
Antonio Martínez Duarte, one of those responsible for the operation, said in an interview with the newspaper El Comercio, “We are faced with an extraordinary arsenal of weapons in Spain that was unthinkable until now.”
According to police, another 2,000 kg of cocaine was seized in an operation in July on a ship in Caribbean waters bound for Spain. At that time, five Venezuelan crew members were arrested.
“The most important thing is we took 2,600 kg of cocaine from the streets and we never found an arsenal,” said Martínez Duarte.
Police reported that in addition to his Brazilian girlfriend, Venezuelan crew members and the Mexican person, other nationalities were also detained. They must spend time in the European country.
