Scott Nelson, nicknamed “Murrugan, The Mystic”, was seriously injured at a presentation in Washington, United States, after 25 years of swallowing a sword. The 59-year-old man had his esophagus, liver and lungs punctured after swallowing 5 swords, which was at serious risk of death.
Nelson spent a month in an induced coma and told KGVT that within 20 minutes of his performance at the Six Flags America theme park, he realized something was wrong.
It was very difficult to breathe and I felt like my chest was full. I knew I was in trouble.
Taken to the hospital, Scott underwent several surgeries, including removal of part of his lung. For more than two decades, the artist has been using blunt-edged swords approximately 1.27 cm wide and 60 to 71 cm long in his craft. The San Diego native said this was the second accident of its kind he’d experienced.
Since his survival, deemed miraculous by the medical team, Nelson claims to have experienced a “spiritual awakening” and swears he will no longer perform with swords.
However, he said he plans to continue doing other parts of his show, such as eating light bulbs and sleeping in a bed of nails.
Scott posted pictures of his injuries and bruises on his Facebook and crowdfunded to help with his medical expenses.
Five swords cut through my abdominal cavity. I also feel like I pierced the lobe of my liver. The good news is that I quit smoking and lost more than 50 pounds.
