To get to this site, you have to travel three days from Quito until you reach your destination. The cave is located in the middle of the tropical jungle of the province of Morona, east of the Andes mountain range.

Legend has it that the place was already known to the tribe Shuar but it was only in 1969 that the Hungarian-Argentine Juan Moriczanthropologist and passionate researcher, discovered the mythical site.

In the cave, Móricz found some metal plates with engravings reminiscent of the Sumerian civilization.

Sumer is a historical region in the Middle East, the southern part of ancient Mesopotamia, between the floodplains of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. The Sumerian civilization is considered to be the first civilization in the world.

According to Móricz, these images told the origin and history of those people. Talking to the newspaper the universe, Móricz, assured: “You may call me crazy, but there are higher beings under the earth”.

The cave is named (Tayos) after a brown nocturnal bird that lives in deep caves in the jungle and tropical places of Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru and Bolivia.

Conspiracy theories and Neil Armstrong

After Juan Moricz’s discoveries, mystery lovers were not slow to make fantastic interpretations. One of those who defended the hypothesis that higher beings were found in the cave. Was Erich von Danikenauthor of the book “L’oro degli dei” (1972), which claimed the existence of an alleged underground civilization.

After Moricz’s research and Däniken’s book, a great stir arose which led to the largest of the expeditions carried out up to that time in the cave. In 1976, the governments of Ecuador and England have reached an agreement to inspect the place and investigate the origin of these metal plates and their unusual engravings.

the Scottish engineer Stan Hall he commanded the mission in the Cueva de los Tayos, with the participation of research institutes, the Ecuadorian Armed Forces and Neil Armstrong, American astronaut and first human being to set foot on the Moon.

The goal of the expedition was to corroborate or refute the hypotheses of the existence of superior beings in the place. Stan Hall E Neil ArmstrongTogether with the whole team, they faced the three-day journey to reach the Cueva de los Tayos. Once they reached the mouth of the cave, explorers entering the place had to do so by abseiling.

From the first descent, the cave opens into large rooms, narrow tunnels, places with cavities and spaces full of stalactites and stalagmites.

One of the most impressive sights in the place is the Móricz Portal. It is an opening in the rock that resembles an elongated door that is striking for its perfect square shape, which seems to have been carved in a perfect way.

This geological formation has fueled the belief of many people who are prone to the fantastical and think that the place was created by higher humans, or even other unknown beings.

To enter the Cueva de los Tayos you must do so with an official permit, but above all with the guide of the Shuar tribe. There are 17.9-kilometer tunnels in the cave, according to a study by the Ecuadorian National Section of the Pan-American Institute of Geography and History in 2017.

Stan’s expedition was a complete success. Among the pieces found, some metal plates with engravings that recall the Sumerian mythology widespread in western Asia 2,900 years before Christ and that tell the story of humanity and its relationship with the celestial beings, inhabitants of the land of the ocean or of the underworld.

It is not known very well what happened to the relics found, what is clear is that the Shuar felt very disappointed with the expedition.

The Shuar

The locals felt cheated and ripped off by all the researchers and tourists who visited the cave. There are many book authors who have made their fortunes exposing the Cuevas de los Tayos, but the local Indians have not received any compensation for this. After the “looting” of metal plates, ceramics, tables, etc. The site was left completely without traces of life.

On the other hand, and as a curious fact, the historical goods that existed in the cave have not been seen in any museum or exhibition, and there are no claims for the return of these goods to their place of origin. Because of this, the Shuar are not very open to letting visitors in.

Miguel Garzon He shot the documentary “Tayos” in 2017 and for this he had to spend several days inside the cave: “It is more spectacular than most caves. It has formations that give rise to speculation about its origin”. The documentary was the last cave record:Myth or reality?.
