Police on this British island in the English Channel said on Saturday (10) that one person was killed and ten missing after an explosion at a building in Jersey’s capital.
Local police chief Robin Smith said one person was killed and two others were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
“Logically, there are several other people whose whereabouts are unknown, and so a search and rescue operation was launched,” Smith said, calculating that “a dozen” of the building’s residents have yet to answer calls.
He said a “big explosion” occurred around 4 a.m. at a residence in Saint Helier, in the south of this island off the coast of Normandy, France.
Police said the fire was under control, but emergency teams continued to carry out “significant work” in the isolated area.
According to Smith, 20 to 30 people were evacuated from the area and taken to Saint Helier town hall.
“Given the destruction of the building, it is difficult to determine the exact number of casualties,” said Kristina Moore, head of the Jersey Government, adding that it could take “several days” to clear the site.
Authorities did not immediately report the cause of the explosion.
