The Lascar volcano in northern Chile experienced a surge in activity this Saturday, causing an earthquake and a plume of smoke up to 6,000 meters high.

“At 12:36 p.m. local time, monitoring stations installed near the Láscar volcano recorded an earthquake associated with the dynamics of fluids within the volcanic system,” the Chilean National Geological and Mining Service (Sernageomin) detailed.

Authorities increased the alert level around the mountain from green to yellow and created a 5km safety perimeter around the crater, affecting the grazing and climbing sectors. A report was also published for air traffic in that area.

Láscar is located in the Antofagasta region at an altitude of 5,592 meters, 70 km from the town of San Pedro de Atacama, one of Chile’s main tourist destinations. It last erupted in 1993.
