Former Russian President and current number two on the Security Council, Dmitri Medvedev, announced this Sunday (11) that Russia is building “more powerful means of destruction” based on “new principles” that it will use to attack the West.
“Our enemy is not just entrenched in the Kiev government. [uma entidade territorial administrativa da Rússia imperial] (…) There are also in Europe, North America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and other places that swore allegiance to the Nazis,” he said.
“Therefore, we are increasing the production of the most powerful means of destruction, including those based on new principles,” a message posted on Telegram said.
Medvedev did not elaborate on what those principles would be, but it could be a reference to the next generation of hypersonic weapons that Moscow has claimed has been developing in recent years.
The possibility of a nuclear war has been looming since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February.
Russia’s recent military defeats on the ground have raised fears that Moscow is considering resorting to a nuclear arsenal.
This week, Russian President Vladimir Putin downplayed the risk of using such weapons, saying he would only use them “in response” to a possible enemy attack on his territory, not first.
