The US Middle East Military Command (Centcom) announced this Sunday (11) that two leaders of the extremist organization Islamic State (IS) were killed in a US attack in eastern Syria.
Centcom said in a statement that “a successful helicopter airstrike was carried out in eastern Syria early in the morning” and that “two leaders of the ISIS organization were killed”.
One of them was named Anas, and he was the leader of a group in Syria “planning bloody operations” on eastern Syrian territory.
The statement did not give details about the second jihadist leader killed.
“The initial balance shows no civilian casualties,” Centcom added.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the US military carried out the operation in cooperation with the soldiers of the Syrian Democratic Forces (Kurdish-majority SDF) in the Al-Zor municipality of Deir ez-Zor province.
ISIS announced on November 30 that its leader, Iraqi Abu Hassan al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, died, although he did not specify the circumstances under which he died.
Hundreds of American troops have been deployed in northeastern Syria as part of the coalition against IS, which was defeated in Iraq in 2017 and Syria in 2019.
