An Argentine doctor saved a tourist from a heart attack during the Aerolíneas Argentinas flight between Buenos Aires and Posadas. The incident occurred during Argentina’s World Cup quarter-final match against the Netherlands on Friday 9 (9), local newspaper Primeira Edición reported.
At the time, the plane was experiencing turbulence when a 65-year-old Chilean man began to feel ill. The passenger asked for help from the crew, who said that he would be taken care of as soon as the plane stabilized. Crews realized that the situation was more serious when they rescued him.
The crew asked if there was a doctor on board, and a man immediately stepped forward. The professional wearing the Argentina national team’s number 10 jersey helped the passenger who had a heart attack, who did not want to be identified because “every colleague would have done the same”.
“We had moments of great suffering because we knew a passenger had a problem, but we couldn’t do anything because the turbulence was so strong. There were scenes of panic and a lot of suffering,” he said.
“When I approached the man and was able to talk to him, I realized that the situation was typical of a heart attack. He was diabetic and hypertensive and had no recent medical examination.”
The healthcare professional also reported that the crew remained calm the entire time and brought him a box of medication and a defibrillator that he didn’t need to use. The expert was also informed by the pilot that a landing could be made in a nearby city. However, the passenger had already been given medication and was asked to wait for an improvement before making any decisions.
“Since the saturation is very low, I made a route for him to breathe, we put oxygen and medicine for these situations. The pain started to decrease and we were able to complete the trip,” he said.
The doctor, who got off the plane amid the applause of the other passengers, said that the patient was “fully conscious” when the plane landed in Posadas.
“My friends and acquaintances found out about this on social media and started looking for me, but I just did something I was trained to do.”
