A woman who didn’t know she was pregnant was shocked when she went into labor on the plane. With severe stomach pains, she went to the plane’s bathroom and came out with a baby in her arms.
According to the New York Post, the incident occurred on Wednesday (7) on a KLM flight from Guayaquil in Ecuador to Spain. The woman had to go ashore on a scale in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to seek medical attention.
The passenger, whose name is Tamara, told the doctors that she didn’t really know she was expecting a baby. She felt a severe pain in her stomach during the flight and went to the bathroom to relax. However, the symptoms persisted and intensified until the woman realized that she was in fact in labor.
A spokesperson for the Spaarne Gasthuis Haarlem hospital said: “A few hours before landing in the Netherlands, she had a stomachache and decided to go to the toilet. After two contractions she suddenly took a baby in her arms.” Zuid, Netherlands
An airline spokesperson said two doctors and an Austrian nurse were on the plane and helped Tamara after her surprise delivery.
The Ecuadorian, living in Madrid, named the baby Maximiliano in honor of one of the passengers who helped him during the mess.
KLM reported that Tamara and the baby are doing well. As soon as he landed at Schiphol Airport on Thursday (8) the duo was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
He told the hospital, “The obstetrics team did everything possible to ensure that both of them received appropriate care. As soon as possible, Tamara and Maximiliano will be discharged and go to Madrid.”
