The cannibal who killed the 25-year-old student and ate the victim’s genitals was sentenced to life imprisonment. The decision was made yesterday by the Michigan state Attorney General.
Mark Latunski, 52, killed Kevin Bacon, 25, in December 2019. According to the Daily Mail, the man admitted that the young man had dismembered and ate his testicles, in addition to other body parts.
He met the victim on the Grindr dating app on December 24. Relatives of the student reported that the student was missing after the young man did not show up for the Christmas family reunion. The body was found four days later in the basement of the killer’s home.
In court, the teenager’s family read the statement made to Latunski on behalf of the entire family. “In your twisted, sickly mind, you probably don’t think you’re doing anything wrong,” Bacon’s mother Hannah wrote. “This Christmas, I hope you suffer like us.”
Bacon, a student and hairdresser at the University of Michigan-Flint, was found by police with a knife stabbed in his jacket and his throat slit while hanging from the rafters of Latunski’s house by his ankles.
In September, when the confession took place, a prosecutor asked a question about the student’s stabbing: “Did you know that stabbing a knife into Mr. Bacon would certainly pose a very high risk of death or major bodily harm to Mr. Bacon?”. The cannibal later admitted to stabbing the teenager, cutting off his testicles and eating the pieces in the kitchen.
According to ABC 12, Latunski’s defense sought to find him mentally fit for trial after months of psychiatric treatment at a Michigan hospital.
Background
This wasn’t the first time Latunski had been the subject of attention by US law enforcement. In October 2019, a New York man called agents after the cannibal allegedly woke up in his basement. He managed to escape. A month later, the police got another call about a new victim.
In November of the same year, a man told police that Latunski had fled his home after being tied up in his basement. According to Fox 2, a neighbor of the cannibal at the time found the victim on the porch.
The man was covered in blood and while trying to escape, he managed to knock on a neighbor’s door. Police stopped Latunski, but no official charges were brought.
Latunski was also married to a man for three years and ended their relationship in September 2019. At that time, the convict stopped taking his medications to treat his mental illness, according to court records. “I could never have imagined that he could commit such a terrible crime,” said her ex-husband Arnold.
In August 2019, Latunski was previously married and had two children from a woman who requested the suspension of visitation rights for her children, citing a diagnosis of depression, schizophrenia and personality disorder. He was previously arrested for not paying child support in July 2019.
