The Peruvian Congress rejected a proposal to postpone the country’s general elections to December 2023. There were 49 votes in favor, 33 against and 25 abstentions.
As there is an amendment to the country’s Constitution, it would require a two-thirds vote in Parliament, i.e. 87 votes in two ballots. It will also be possible for the text to be accepted by 66 votes and corrected by popular vote.
The proposal was presented by Hernando Guerra García, Member of Parliament from the party. keiko Right-wing opposition leader Fujimori. The country is facing demonstrations against the arrest of ousted president Pedro Castillo and is calling for a new election.
