Taliban commanders said on Sunday that 19 people were killed and dozens injured in a tunnel accident in eastern Afghanistan, when a truck carrying fuel caught fire.
Hamidullah Misbah, spokesperson of the Ministry of Public Works, told AFP that at least 19 people were killed and 32 injured in the incident.
According to Abdullah Afghan Mal, a senior health official in Parwan province, “many women and children were cremated” among the dead.
The accident occurred on Saturday night when the tanker truck overturned and caught fire, and the flames spread to several other vehicles.
The Salang Tunnel, where the accident occurred, is 3 thousand 650 meters high and 2.6 kilometers long. It was built in the 1950s on the Hindu Kush massif.
In the northern winter, heavy snowfalls and avalanches are common, forcing authorities to close the tunnel for several days.
