At least 36 people were injured on a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix to Hawaii in the United States. About 30 minutes before the plane landed, severe turbulence occurred, and of the dozens of casualties, 11 were seriously injured and 3 were flight attendants.
According to the local Hawaiian News Now, the turbulence caused passengers to be thrown out of their seats. The plane was full, carrying 278 passengers and 10 crew members.
Medical teams intervened in patients with head wounds, cuts, bruises, nausea and loss of consciousness. All in steady state, according to Honolulu Emergency Department Director Dr. Jim Ireland.
Despite the incident, the airline said the plane “landed safely” at its destination, Honolulu.
Passenger Kaylee Reyes told the newspaper that there were no warnings that the plane would pass through a turbulent region. According to her, the mother had just sat in the seat and had not had time to fasten her seat belt. “It flew and hit the ceiling,” Kaylee said.
Another passenger, Jazmin Bitanga, said she felt two “heavy” drops in altitude, in one of which her boyfriend’s water bottle flew into the ceiling. “There were people bleeding,” he said.
In an image obtained by the newspaper, it is possible to observe that the roof of the plane was damaged after the incident.
The plane is believed to have passed through a storm that caused severe turbulence. An investigation is ongoing to find out what really happened.
