The African National Congress (ANC), the ruling party in South Africa, has re-elected President Cyril Ramaphosa as its leader and will therefore remain at the head of the country’s government, according to the formation’s announcement this Monday (19).
Ramaphosa, 70, won the race among party delegates gathered at a convention in Johannesburg. Ramaphosa received 2,476 votes against 1,897 for his only rival, former health minister Zweli Mkhize.
The result of the vote paves the way for the president to win a second term should the ANC win the 2024 general election.
Ramaphosa started out as a favorite when the contestants were announced last month. His party bailed him out of parliamentary impeachment last week.
The president has been hit by a scandal in recent months after he was accused of hiding wads of money on the sofa of one of his properties.
Analysts were also hoping to know the profile of the next vice president. The ANC selected Paul Mashatile, 61, from Johannesburg’s poorest county, for the post. Until now, Mashatile was the party treasurer.
