According to a letter sent by the Ministry of Higher Education to all public and private universities, Taliban officials announced Tuesday (20) that women in Afghanistan are indefinitely banned from accessing university education.
The letter, published by Minister Neda Mohammad Nadeem, states, “Women are advised to follow the order to suspend their education until further notice.”
Tweeting this, ministry spokesperson Ziaulah Hashimi confirmed the order in a message to AFP.
The ban on access to higher education comes less than three months after thousands of women took the nationwide university entrance exams, a type of entrance exam.
Since the Islamic fundamentalist group regained control of Afghanistan in August last year, universities have been forced to impose new rules, including gender discrimination in classrooms and building entrances.
In addition, students can only take lessons with female or older male teachers.
Most teenage girls across the country are already banned from attending high school, severely limiting their chances of getting into college.
