The bodies of the hikers were recovered lifeless by the Quito firefighters at more than 4,000 meters above sea level.

The mountain, his passion
Dayra was known among climbers for reaching the peaks of Cotopaxi Volcano and Cayambe Volcano at the age of 10.. He also had that record by climbing Illinizas Sur at an altitude of 5,245 meters.
The girl had started climbing just over a year ago with her aunt, following the example of her mother, the mountaineer Catarina Chiguano.
Dayra and her aunt had made their first ascent together on January 26, at an altitude of 4,463m. Then, in April, they followed up with Cotopaxi Volcano.
When planning the route to climb the volcano with her granddaughter, Tatiana was concerned about how challenging it might be for the girl. But Dayra didn’t care: she persisted and convinced her to do the same.
After completing the quest, the guidance of both, Lenin Almachiwrote about Dayra on her Facebook account that she is a “indestructible girl”.
Iza’s dream was to climb. He wanted to climb many more, so much so that he proposed to climb Cayambe, the third highest in the country at 5790 metres.
