Port police announced on Wednesday that they found a “highly decomposed” baby body on the south coast of the Greek island of Lesbos, one of the main entry points for migrants from neighboring Turkey to Europe.
According to the statement made by the Coast Guard, the body found on the beach of Agios Ermogenis was taken to the hospital in Lesbos, the capital of the island, for an autopsy.
Metin reminds that there were 45 people near this shore on 9 December, including a woman who declared that her baby had fallen into the water before landing on the island.
Another two-month-old baby was found dead on Friday in the same area of the island, after an inflatable boat carrying migrants, mostly from Africa, capsized. During the Coast Guard rescue operations, 32 people were rescued and transferred to Lesbos.
Fleeing war and poverty, many migrants risk their lives by dangerously crossing just a few nautical miles between Greek islands in the eastern Aegean Sea and Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 368 people have died or gone missing in the eastern Mediterranean since the beginning of the year, compared to a total of 111 in 2021.
