Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received a standing ovation from both Democrats and Republicans in his speech to the US Congress this evening. He thanked the Americans for their financial and war aid. And he said that the Ukrainians are determined in the war imposed by Russia.
At the end of her speech, she handed the Ukrainian flag to US Vice President Kamala Harris and US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
As soon as it was announced that Zelensky would speak, US congressmen stood up and applauded Zelensky.
Interrupted by the applause of members of Congress, the Ukrainian president said, “Ukraine stands firm on its line and will never surrender.” He thanked the Americans for their support. “Your money is not charity. It is an investment in global security,” he added.
A US official said Joe Biden announced nearly $2 billion in military aid to Ukraine, including a series of Patriot missiles. Ukraine’s air defenses were effective in preventing the military from gaining an advantage in the conflict.
The US president also announced that the country will send more than $374 million in humanitarian aid to Ukraine later today. The amount will be split between food and cash assistance for more than 1.5 million Ukrainians and “help with access to health care, clean water and warmth in winter” for more than 2.5 million people living in Ukraine.
Earlier, Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Ukraine that the continuation of Western weapons would lead to a “deepening” of the conflict. The Kremlin said on Wednesday it did not see a chance for peace talks with Kyiv.
