Luis Lacalle Pou will go with former presidents José “Pepe” Mujica and Julio María Sanguinetti to the inauguration of Lula da Silva

The former president of Uruguay José ‘Pepe’ Mujica (2010-2015) and Julio María Sanguinetti (1985-1990 and 1995-2000) will accompany the current president of that country, Luis Lacalle Pou, to the inauguration ceremony of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as president of Brazilnext January 1st.

The confirmation came a day after Lacalle Pou announced that he had made this invitation to his predecessors. “I called President Sanguinetti and President Mujica to ask them to accompany me at the inauguration of the president of Brazil. Why? Because that’s what Uruguay has to demonstrate,” the president said in a speech as part of the inauguration of the dual-track national route project.

And he added: “They won’t be surprised if I tell them that I have some political disagreements with President Mujica and that I have more coincidences with President Sanguinetti, but what is it, that is, institutional democratic and republican continuity than in the world today, few countries around the globe can prove it.”

This Friday in dialogue with EFE, Sanguinetti indicated that Lacalle Pou had invited two former presidents “of very opposite political leanings” with the idea of ​​showing the importance that Uruguay attaches to relations with Brazil, while noting that in your country “dialogue exists, despite the natural political debate of democratic life”.

For his part, Mujica spoke today with public media in Uruguay and also confirmed that he will go to the inauguration of Lula da Silva.

When asked about the importance of this, he said: “Importance is symbolic. It is an affirmation of the characteristics that Uruguay has, where you can and do have huge differences, but in any case we can give ourselves that kind of joint presence, trying to represent the country on a global level.”

Lula’s visit to Uruguay

Mujica said the idea is for Lula to make a stopover in Uruguayand in the context of his visit to Argentina for the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), which will take place in Buenos Aires on 23 and 24 January.

And he added: “We will try to have Lula visit Uruguay, because it is convenient as a gesture and for future reasons.
