Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told state news agency TASS that Moscow is ready to restart gas supplies to Europe via the Yamal-Europe pipeline.

In comments posted by TASS on Sunday, Novak said, “The European market remains important as gas shortages remain and we have every opportunity to maintain supply.”

“For example, the Yamal-Europa gas pipeline, which was stopped for political reasons, remains unused.”

The flow of the Yamal-Europa pipeline is generally westward, but this has largely been reversed since December 2021, when Poland stopped buying gas from Russia and opted for gas stored in Germany.

In May, Warsaw terminated its agreement with Russia after Moscow’s refusal to pay for gas in rubles.

Russia’s Gazprom responded by cutting off supplies, saying it can no longer export gas through Poland after Moscow sanctioned the company that owns the Polish section of the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline.

Novak also reiterated that Moscow is discussing additional gas supply via Turkey after the establishment of a hub in Turkey.

He also said that Moscow estimates it will ship 21 billion cubic meters (bcm) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe in 2022.

“This year we have been able to significantly increase LNG supplies to Europe,” Novak said. “Supply increased to 19.4 bcm in 11 months of 2022, 21 bcm expected by the end of the year.”
