The city’s prosecutor said on Monday that the person suspected of killing three Kurds in Paris last week is under official investigation.
The 69-year-old, whose name has not been released, was arrested on Friday after two men and a woman were shot dead near a Kurdish cultural center and a Kurdish cafe in Paris’ bustling 10th district.
The deaths shocked a community preparing to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the unsolved murder of three activists and sparked protests that led to clashes with police over the weekend.
Under French law, being under formal investigation means finding serious or consistent evidence that indicates a suspect has been involved in a crime.
In the statement made by the prosecutor’s office, it was stated that the investigation carried out by the judge will look into the charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of an unauthorized weapon.
He added that a racist motive is suspected behind the attack.
Kurdish representatives called for the attack to be considered a terrorist attack. They also called for a silent protest on the Monday afternoon when the attack took place.
