WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The White House on Monday accused Texas Governor Greg Abbott of risking lives after buses of immigrants from the southwestern border of Texas were dumped near Vice President Kamala Harris’ home in Washington, D.C. on a cold Christmas Eve. .
Abbott, a Republican who was fiercely critical of the Biden administration’s immigration policies, did not accept the Christmas Eve shipment of vehicles and his office did not take responsibility. President Joe Biden is a Democrat.
After the migrants arrived in the US capital on Sunday, an estimated 110 to 130 migrants seeking asylum in the US, most of them families with children, were loaded onto buses by Texas authorities, migrant aid groups said on Sunday.
“Governor Abbott left the children by the wayside on Christmas Eve in sub-zero temperatures without coordination with any federal or local authority,” White House spokesman Abdullah Hassan said in a statement.
“Political games lead nowhere and only endanger lives,” said Hasan.
Texas has transported thousands of immigrants by bus to Washington, New York and Chicago, in a move that some critics have termed a political maneuver amid a national debate over high levels of immigrant arrivals along the southern US border.
Hasan said the Biden administration is willing to work with Democrats and Republicans to resolve the immigration problem.
