According to a report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) released Wednesday (28), 6,884 civilians have been killed in the war in Ukraine since February 24, but the actual number is likely “significantly higher”.
The document states that 2,719 men, 1,832 women, 175 boys and 216 girls were killed. Another 38 children and 1904 adults are blamed, but the gender is unknown.
Most of the victims are in Donbass, Donetsk and Lugansk regions, where separatist groups have been at war with Kiev since 2014. There were 4,052 war victims here.
But UNHCR cautions that the actual numbers for the conflict should be higher because “information from areas of intense hostilities is delayed and many reports are still awaiting confirmation”.
Still, according to the UN agency, most civilian deaths “resulted from the use of explosive weapons with a wide range of effect”.
This Wednesday, again, all Ukrainian territory is on air strike alert due to the use of Russian missiles.
Also, according to the “Unian” portal, one of the worst bombings in Russia takes place in the eastern part of the city of Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine, and in the region of the same name.
“Kharkiv is under attack. I ask everyone to stay in shelters and follow precautionary measures,” the mayor Igor Terekhov wrote in a message via Telegram.
District military chief Oleg Sinegubov also posted on the social network in the same tone, urging residents not to “ignore” the warnings.
As with all general audiences since the beginning of the conflict, Pope Francis once again prayed for the Ukrainians and demanded that “Jesus baby be the desired gift of peace to the martyr Ukraine, crushed by the brutality of war.”
The Catholic leader has been praying and calling for peace in the European country since February and has said he is always ready to mediate any possible negotiations that will end the conflict.
