Kate Winslet didn’t need to put up with that 7 minutes and 15 seconds underwater for every particular scene in Avatar: The Waterway, but he did it anyway.
The 47-year-old actress jumped into a pool in the middle of filming the sequel to the 2009 film and broke her own record…with a minute to spare.
In a recent video that circulated on social networks through the BBC and La Cosa Cine, Winslet can be seen perfectly performing the apnea test. “I’m dead?”, he says as soon as he comes out of the water. He then asks his coach “What was my time?”, to which the other first makes him guess and then tells him how much he did.
What had Winslet said?
Before the video came to light, the actress had opened up about her particular feat.
“I didn’t have to hold my breath for more than seven minutes (in the film). It’s just that the opportunity to set a record has presented itself. I wanted to break my own record, or six minutes and 14 seconds. And I was like, ‘Come on!’ So I broke my record for one minute,” the actress recalled in a conversation with Total Film.
“I have a video of me emerging saying, ‘Am I dead, am I dead?’ And then I say, ‘How long was (my time)?’ I immediately wanted to know my time. And I couldn’t believe it… The next thing I say is, ‘We need a radio set.’ I wanted Jim to know immediately,” she had said.
Word of James Cameron
Own James Camerondirector of Avatar, referred to the challenge Winslet faced on the set of his film.
“We have the video somewhere, but his record is 7 minutes and 14 seconds. That said, this is static apnea. She’s not swimming, she’s upside down. You enter a trans zen state; slow down your heart rate. They taught him how to do it,” revealed the director.
Moreover, the director said so Sigourney Weaver Y Zoe Saldanatwo actresses who participate in Avatar: The path of water, also tried, but did not reach as far as Kate, getting 6 and 5 minutes respectively.
The film meant Winslet and Cameron’s reunion behind the cameras afterward titanic. In the story of Avatar: The Way of Water, the actress plays the Na’vi Ronala powerful woman from the aquatic world of Pandora who, together with her husband, leads a tribe.
What about Avatar 3?
While Avatar 2 is a box office success (it has exceeded 900 million dollars in collections and is one of the most successful of the year), there is already talk of the premiere of 3, a film that Cameron recorded at the same time as 2.
