The Pentagon reported that the US State Department has approved the sale of anti-tank systems to Taiwan for $180 million.
The sale includes Volcano anti-tank ammunition delivery systems, cargo trucks, ammunition, logistics support packages and other related services, according to a Pentagon statement.
“The proposed sale serves the national, economic and security interests of the United States by supporting the buyer’s efforts to modernize its Armed Forces and maintain a reliable defense capability,” the statement said.
The Chinese government considers Taiwan, which has a democratic government, to be part of its territory and has become more aggressive towards the island during Xi Jinping’s presidency.
Beijing has protested this year’s visits by US and foreign politicians to Taiwan.
In August, the country held military exercises to protest the trip of Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
President Joe Biden passed a defense spending law last week that includes up to $10 billion in military support to Taiwan.
