US President Joe Biden on Thursday signed into law the $1.7 trillion budget bill that will protect government funding for the next fiscal year and includes another major package for relief efforts in Ukraine’s war with Russia.

Biden, who spent his vacation in Saint Croix in the US Virgin Islands, shared a photo on Twitter while signing the bill.

“It will invest in medical research, safety, medical care for veterans and disaster recovery,” and will also fund programs to combat violence against women, the president said.

It also “allocates very important aid to Ukraine”.

The budget bill had the support of Republicans in a divided Congress that secured a new legislative victory for Biden, who passed his second year in office.

The bill includes $45 billion in urgent economic and military aid to Ukraine, which has been fighting against the Russian occupation since February 24.

That same month, Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky was in Washington to ask for increased American aid.

The norm also includes complements, such as a reform that toughened a 19th-century law to make it clear that the U.S. vice president does not have the power to annul election results.

The goal is to prevent a repeat of the chaotic move of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), which included an attempt to force then-Vice President Mike Pence to terminate his certification, to not allow Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election to be confirmed. .
