Lula says “Faith and devotion to Christian teachings” about Bento 16

The president-elect posted a message on social networks that he regretted the death of the retired pope. He was 95 years old and died in a former convent within the Vatican gardens where he had lived since 2013, when he resigned.

Lula recalled Bento 16’s visit to Brazil in 2007 when he was president of the PT, and said he had the opportunity to talk to the pastor “about his commitment to faith and Christian teachings.”

He ends his message by wishing “comfort to the faithful and admirers of the Holy Father.”

Benedict XVI was in Brazil from 9-13 May 2007. During his visit:

  • He had commitments in São Paulo, Aparecida (SP) and Guaratinguetá (SP)
  • celebrated rites, met with youth, visited a farm for drug addicts recuperation, and opened the 5th Celam (Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal General Conference).

The retired pope died at 9:34 am (5:34 Brazilian time). In a statement from the Vatican, it was announced that the funeral will be buried in St. Peter’s Basilica from Monday, 2 (2).

The funeral will be under the presidency of Pope Francis on Wednesday (5) at São Pedro Square at 9:30 local time (5:30 Brasília time).
