For Netflix, the bar for success is getting higher and higher. With just 8 episodes, an open ending, and not-so-bad viewership numbers, the platform has canceled the 1899 series. Now, those who watched it in its entirety will never know the ending.
The second shot of Baran Bo Odar Y Jantje Friesethe creators of DarkIt didn’t go as planned. Netflix has decided that, unlike what was planned, there will be no second or third season of 1899.
1899 was one of the 2022 premieres that raised the most anticipation. Why? Because it was the novelty of the German director duo, for the interesting premises and for the heterogeneous and promising cast.
The numbers were also not as bad as those of other series also canceled by Netflix. In the week following its release, 1899 was in the top 2 most viewed of the week, behind only a platformer titan like The crown.
But all this was not enough. The widespread criticism, the lack of the expected audience and, probably, its high production cost led the company to make a radical decision.
a sad announcement
The determination was announced by Odar and Friese on Instagram. In a message, the showrunners explained, “It is with a heavy heart that we have to tell you that ‘1899’ will not be renewed. We would have loved to wrap up this incredible journey with a second and third season like we did with Dark. things don’t go like one, “plan them.”
His idea was that the second season of his series would be set in a very different environment from the first. “It is, like Dark, to be told over three seasons“, they declared.
“We always keep in mind the end point, the end of the journey, the biggest reveal of all,” added the directors. For them, all the puzzles left open from the first season would find solutions later.
In just 8 episodes, 1899 tells the story of a group of passengers and crew of a ship who find another ship lost at sea. From there, several mysteries unfold in the twisted Dark style.
The reactions
On social networks, the announcement of the creators of 1899 has not gone unnoticed. Some didn’t make a dent, but others – those who watched the series to the end – fell like a bucket of cold water.
“Is there any chance that someone else will pick it up? Please, we need the full story!” one person replied to Odar and Friese’s post.
“How is it possible that a terrible show like Emily in Paris has 3 seasons and hasn’t been renewed?” added another.
“Absolutely shameful that it is not renewed. One of the best shows of last year and with so much potential to explore our future as humanity. Thanks for all the love and art you put into it. I hope the network changes its mind or another more sensible network picks it up,” agreed a third.
