Taking into account what has happened in the last few hours in Ukraine, one can easily speak of a miracle, defined by the Royal Spanish Academy as a “rare, extraordinary and wonderful event or thing”. After the surgery, Military medics removed an unexploded grenade from a soldier’s chest. It was under her heart.
It was undoubtedly an operation destined to enter the medical books.
Volodimir Zelenski’s deputy defense minister, Hanna Maliar, recounted the episode in a Facebook post and recalled that “not all wounds in the heart area are fatal”. Furthermore, she called the whole thing a “shock.”
“The military doctors carried out an operation to extract a VOG grenade, which did not break, from the soldier’s body,” said the deputy minister, posting an image of an X-ray on the social network in which the device can be seen inside the soldier’s body and the photo of the surgeon holding the part of the grenade after the operation.
A dangerous and risky operation, both for the wounded and for the doctors. So much so that even in the operating room personnel were present whose task was to guarantee the safety of the members of the personnel in charge of the intervention.
Furthermore, to make the operation even more complicated, it was necessary to operate without using electrocoagulation (a method of controlling bleeding during surgery) because “the grenade could explode at any moment”Maliar underlined.
Despite the many risks, the operation “performed by one of the most experienced surgeons in the Armed Forces of Ukraine” was a success.
After the device was removed from the chest, the explosive was reduced, the adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Gerashchenko said. “There has never been such an operation in the practice of our doctors”he said, noting that the soldier is now undergoing rehabilitation and his condition is stable.
“I think this case will end up in the medical textbooks,” he added.
