Timeline of the Biden secret documents case: what is known so far

Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday released a more detailed timeline in connection with the discovery of classified Obama administration documents found in storage. improperly in places associated with President Joe Biden.

The following, based on Garland’s statement and previous White House statements, is what we know about how events unfolded.

November 2nd: Biden’s attorneys discovered a “small number” of confidential documents in what the White House described as a locked cabinet from an office Biden used at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, a think tanks of Washington. The administration said it reported this find to the National Archives the same day.

November 3: According to the administration, the National Archives recovered the material from the cabinet.

November 4th: National Archives officials are referring the matter to the Justice Department.

November 14: Garland selected Chicago U.S. Attorney John Lausch to conduct a preliminary review of the material and determine whether special counsel was needed.

December 20: Biden’s lawyers have informed Lausch that they have found a second set of documents classified in the garage of his Wilmington, Delaware home, according to Garland.

The administration separately said that notified “immediately” the Justice Department of the discovery of a “small number” of those files in a garage storage room, as well as of a single page document in an adjoining room.

January 5: Lausch told Garland that the appointment of special adviser.

January 9th: CBS News reported the existence of the documents found at the Penn Biden Center. The White House acknowledged the matter in a statement, but did not refer to documents found at the president’s home in Wilmington.

January 10: Biden told reporters in Mexico City he was “shocked” to learn in the fall that confidential documents had been brought into his former office at the think tank, but did not disclose that any other documents had been found.

January 11: NBC News reported that a second batch of classified documents was found, but with no details on how, when or where. It would later become clear that it was the lot found in the garage on December 20th.

January 12th: The White House publicly acknowledged that the documents had been found in Biden’s garage, along with an additional document that was “discovered among materials stored in an adjacent room.”

A search of Biden’s home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, turned up no documents, the administration said. Officials did not describe when the search took place. Garland announced that he would nominate roberto hu as special counsel to investigate.
