Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov this Wednesday praised relations between Russia and Latin American countries, and also made a special mention to Argentinawhich he indicated as one of the countries with which Moscow “is interested in collaborating”.
“Argentina, Mexico, Bolivia, Peru… We are interested in collaborating,” said the head of Russian diplomacy, in the middle of a press conference where he stressed Moscow’s ties with Latin America.
Recall that the Russian Foreign Minister had already shown signs of Russia’s interest in Argentina in 2022, when he stated that the country He was a candidate to join the BRICSthe set of large countries with growing economies that make up Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
“Of course, Argentina is a respected and decent candidate, as are many other countries mentioned in the discussions,” Lavrov said at the time.
At this Wednesday’s conference, Lavrov stressed that the exports to Latin America increased by 10% last yearand that Moscow appreciates the bilateral history with many states and their solidarity on international platforms.
“Relations with Latin America are booming. We have created mechanisms to coordinate approaches,” Lavrov said in his presentation in Moscow to take stock of 2022 and mark the goals of Russian diplomacy for this year.
The minister referred particular to the interaction in the Russia-CELAC format.
In this sense, he added, the representatives of Moscow and of four countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States have already met on several occasions in the past, but the outbreak of the Covid pandemic has had an impact on the continuity of the meetings.
“We will resume that cooperation soon,” he said.
Lavrov stressed that in the Latin American region there are countries with which Russia has been cooperating “for a long time”.
In particular, he highlighted the ties with Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, adding it Moscow appreciates bilateral history with those and other countries of the regionas well as their solidarity on international platforms.
Likewise, cultural ties have continued to strengthen, he said.
“Of the 33 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean with 27 we have visa free travel arrangements“, he stressed.
