At least nine people died in a shooting Saturday night it occurred on the outskirts of a Chinese New Year celebration, in a city near Los Angeles, United States, according to US authorities and media.
The Monterey Park shooting happened next a celebration of the lunar new year which attracted thousands of people, police said.
It happened in a shop and the shooter is a man, Los Angeles County Police Sergeant Bob Boese said today, CNN reported.
Monterey Park is a city of approximately 60,000 people with a large Asian population that is approximately 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles.
The owner of a restaurant across the street from the shooting told the Los Angeles Times three people ran into his premises and asked him to lock the doors.
The man, Seung Won Choi, added that people have told him there was a man with a machine gun, and said he believed the shooting had occurred in a nightclub at around 10pm.
A two-day festival that is one of the largest Lunar New Year events in Southern California kicked off Saturday in and around Los Angeles.
