After a series of recent shootings in California, the governor turned the blame on Republicans. In particular, it directly targeted Kevin McCarthy, the leader of the House of Representatives.
According to Politico, a political media outlet, California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized Republican House Minority Leader McCarthy on the 24th (local time), saying, “Where have you been on the issue of gun safety reform?”
Earlier, in California, on the 21st of the Lunar New Year, a 72-year-old man, Hugh Cantran, committed a shooting at a Monterey Park dance school, killing a total of 11 people. A few days later, on the 23rd, another shooting in Half Moon Bay killed seven people.
Gov. Newsom, a Democrat, raised his voice, saying, “Where has the Republican Party been on the issue of gun safety reform?” He is known to have met with the families of the victims of the Half Moon Bay shooting that day. His comments also came from this spot.
“(The Republican Party) should be ashamed,” said Governor Newsom. The Joe Biden administration and the US Democratic Party have emphasized the need for gun reform after the launch of this administration and the shooting of Yuvaldi Elementary School last year.
California, which has a strong Democratic leanings, has one of the strictest gun laws in the entire country. However, in June of last year, when the conservative Supreme Court ruled that a New York state law restricting the carrying of guns in public places was unconstitutional, gun control through state law became unstable.
Governor Newsom also stressed that even if California has a state law, it cannot stop those who bring guns from other states, and that Congress should take action to limit the size of magazines and ban assault weapons.
“We cannot solve this problem alone,” he said. “I’m still waiting for McCarthy, the head of the House of Representatives,” he said. “Since the Monterey Park incident, he hasn’t heard anything from him.”
McCarthy, the floor leader he is targeting, has Bakersfield, California, as his constituency. Governor Newsom, who is in charge of California administration, including this region, is also considered a sleeper in the 2024 US presidential election.
